The Getrag/Ford MT82 is a 6-speed manual transmission developed for longitudinal rear-wheel-drive applications. Best known for its use in the Ford Mustang, it uses a conventional synchronised gearset with direct mechanical selection and is available in several revisions including the later MT82-D4. Ford continues to identify the MT82-D4 as the 6-speed manual used in current Mustang GT applications.

The MT82 is primarily associated with selected Ford applications, particularly the Mustang. Specifications and internal components vary by production date and transmission revision, so the VIN, complete transmission number, OEM gearbox code and individual component identification should always be confirmed before ordering replacement parts.
Common Faults
Common MT82 problems include synchroniser wear, difficult or notchy shifting, gear engagement problems, shift-fork failure, bearing wear and gear noise. Ford has specifically documented broken 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th shift forks on affected Mustang MT82 transmissions.
As a conventional manual transmission, the MT82 does not have a dedicated transmission control system generating meaningful gearbox-specific OBD fault codes. Mechanical diagnosis should therefore focus on gear selection, synchronisers, shift forks, bearings, clutch operation and internal gearbox condition.
