6HP19, 6HP19X, 6HP21, 6HP21X

The ZF 6HP19, 6HP19X, 6HP21 and 6HP21X are 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmissions developed for longitudinal-engine applications. The 6HP21 is an updated development of the 6HP19 family, while the X variants are configured for applicable all-wheel-drive installations. The family uses a hydrodynamic torque converter with lock-up clutch, Lepelletier planetary gearset arrangement and five shift elements to provide six forward ratios.

Specification: 6-speed automatic • ZF 6HP19 / 6HP19X / 6HP21 / 6HP21X • BMW GA6HP19Z / GA6HP21Z on applicable vehicles • Longitudinal installation • Rear-wheel-drive and AWD applications • Torque converter with lock-up clutch • Lepelletier planetary gearset arrangement • Five shift elements • Integrated electro-hydraulic mechatronic control • Adaptive shift control • 4.171:1 first gear • 0.691:1 sixth gear • Approximately 6.04:1 ratio spread • ZF LifeguardFluid 6 on most applications • Multiple drivetrain and application-specific variants.

The family is used extensively across selected BMW applications, with related 6HP19-series transmissions also appearing in other manufacturer applications. The 6HP19X and 6HP21X are AWD-compatible derivatives, while the 6HP21 represents the later development of the 6HP19. Specifications and components vary by vehicle and production date, so the VIN, complete transmission number, OEM gearbox code and individual component identification should always be confirmed before ordering replacement parts.

Common Faults

Common 6HP19 / 6HP21 family problems include valve-body and mechatronic faults, pressure-control or solenoid wear, torque-converter lock-up wear, hydraulic leakage and internal clutch wear. Symptoms can include harsh or delayed shifts, shift flare, slipping, converter judder, incorrect gears, transmission warnings and failsafe operation.

Mechatronic sealing and hydraulic pressure loss are particularly important diagnostic areas on the 6HP family. Valve-body wear or fluid-pressure problems can cause significant shift issues without necessarily indicating major internal failure, so diagnosis should include fault codes, adaptations, hydraulic operation, converter function and fluid condition.
