6DCT450 / MPS6 / PowerShift / DCT450

The Getrag 6DCT450, commonly known as MPS6 in Volvo applications and PowerShift in Ford applications, is a 6-speed wet dual-clutch transmission designed for higher-torque transverse-engine vehicles. It uses two wet multi-plate clutches and two input shafts, allowing alternate gears to be pre-selected for fast, smooth gear changes.

Specification: 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) • Wet dual multi-plate clutch • Approx. 450 Nm design class • Transverse layout • Electronically and hydraulically controlled • Two input shafts • Two output shafts • Integrated differential • Clutch 1 operates odd gears and reverse • Clutch 2 operates even gears • Front-wheel-drive and AWD applications depending on vehicle.

Commonly fitted to selected Ford Focus, Mondeo, Kuga, C-Max, S-Max and Galaxy, as well as Volvo C30, S40, V50, C70, S60, V60, V70 and S80 applications. Variants of the transmission family were also used by other manufacturers. Multiple versions, clutch configurations and calibrations exist, so the transmission identification and vehicle application should always be confirmed before ordering replacement parts.

Common Fault Codes

Fault Code Typical Description / Area
P0715 / P0716 Input/turbine speed sensor circuit or performance fault
P0720 / P0721 Output speed sensor circuit or performance fault
P0791 / P0792 Intermediate shaft speed sensor circuit/performance
P0751 Shift Solenoid A performance / stuck off
P0756 Shift Solenoid B performance / stuck off
P0771 Shift Solenoid E performance / stuck off
P2849 Shift Fork 1 blocked / stuck
P284A Shift Fork 2 blocked / stuck
P284B Shift Fork 3 blocked / stuck
P284C Shift Fork 4 blocked / stuck

Ford's diagnostic strategy for the MPS6/6DCT450 specifically identifies P2849, P284A, P284B and P284C with blocked shift-fork conditions, while speed-sensor and solenoid DTCs are also documented for transmission diagnosis.

Diagnostic Note: Fault-code definitions and manufacturer-specific suffixes can vary between Ford, Volvo and other applications. A stored DTC does not automatically confirm a failed component; clutch wear, hydraulic pressure loss, solenoid or valve-body faults, sensor problems, TCM issues and internal mechanical wear can produce similar symptoms. Always confirm the vehicle, transmission identification and manufacturer-specific diagnostic information before replacing parts
