MA5
MA5
The PSA MA5, also designated MA/5, is a compact 5-speed manual transmission developed for transverse front-wheel-drive applications. It uses a conventional two-shaft layout with an integrated differential and was widely used with smaller-capacity PSA petrol and diesel engines.
Specification: 5-speed manual • PSA MA5 / MA/5 • MA gearbox family • Transverse installation • Front-wheel drive • Primary and secondary shaft design • Synchronised forward gears • Integrated differential • 75W-80 transmission oil • Multiple gear-ratio and final-drive configurations • Numerous application-specific 20xx gearbox codes.
The MA5 is fitted across selected Peugeot, Citroën and Fiat applications, including Peugeot 106, 206, 207, 208, 307 and Partner, Citroën AX, Saxo, C2, C3, C4 and Berlingo, plus Fiat Fiorino and Qubo. The VIN, complete gearbox code and individual component identification should always be confirmed before ordering replacement parts.
Common Faults
Common MA5 problems include main-shaft bearing wear, differential bearing wear, synchroniser wear, selector problems and oil leaks. Schaeffler specifically identifies main-bearing wear as a typical MA failure, often becoming noticeable as a rattling or transmission noise.
Diagnosis should include oil level and condition, shaft bearings, differential bearings, synchronisers, selector components and clutch operation before the gearbox is dismantled.
