02T (MQ200)
02T (MQ200)
The Volkswagen 02T (MQ200) is a lightweight 5-speed manual transaxle developed for compact Volkswagen Group vehicles. Its magnesium casing and twin-shaft design reduce weight while providing a maximum torque capacity of 200 Nm. The transmission was used extensively across Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda applications.
Specification: 5-speed manual • MQ200 family • Up to 200 Nm torque capacity • Front-wheel drive • Transverse layout • Twin-shaft design • Magnesium housing • Cable-operated gear selection • Hydraulic clutch operation • Double synchronisation on 1st and 2nd gears • Integrated differential.
Commonly fitted to smaller-engined Volkswagen Group vehicles including selected VW Polo, Golf, Bora, Lupo and New Beetle, Audi A1/A2/A3, Škoda Fabia, Octavia and Rapid, and SEAT Ibiza/Córdoba applications. Numerous gearbox codes, gear ratios and final-drive combinations were produced, so the individual gearbox code should always be confirmed before ordering replacement parts.
Common Faults & Diagnostic Symptoms
Unlike an electronically controlled automatic, DSG or CVT transmission, the 02T is a conventional manual gearbox and does not have a dedicated transmission control module or a standard set of gearbox-specific diagnostic trouble codes. Mechanical faults are therefore normally identified through symptoms, inspection and gearbox strip-down rather than transmission DTCs.
| Common Fault / Symptom | Typical Area to Inspect |
|---|---|
| Rattling, whirring or grinding while driving | Twin-bearing carrier / input and output shaft bearings |
| Rattling as transmission speed falls | Twin-bearing mounting plate assembly |
| Difficult or impossible 5th-gear engagement | 5th-gear needle bearing/cage and associated bearing damage |
| Excessive heat around 5th gear | Worn twin-bearing assembly or insufficient lubrication |
| Crunching during gear changes | Synchroniser rings, hubs/sleeves and gear engagement components |
| Difficult 1st or 2nd gear engagement | Double synchroniser assemblies, clutch operation or selector adjustment |
| Gear selection difficult or imprecise | Selector cables, cable adjustment or internal selector mechanism |
| Differential noise or excessive play | Differential tapered roller bearings and final-drive components |
| Gearbox oil leakage | Flange shaft oil seals, input shaft area or gearbox casing joints |
| General internal noise / gear wear | Shaft bearings, needle bearings, gears and lubrication condition |
Diagnostic Note: Vehicle diagnostic systems may record faults relating to the clutch switch, engine speed information, vehicle-speed signals or other drivetrain electronics. These should not be presented as 02T gearbox fault codes because they are generated by other vehicle control modules.
